These Are A Few Of My Favourite Apps

Prelude

I’ve been using the iPhone OS for several years now — I bought the original iPod touch when it came out then I bought an iPhone 3G in January 2009. Throughout that period I’ve used a plethora of apps – both web apps and dedicated apps. The following six apps are some of the best iPhone/iPod touch apps there has ever been.

Pastebot — Command Copy & Paste

First app up on the block is Pastebot by tapbots. I have used this app since the day it came out and to this day I still am discovering new uses for it. I refuse to ever take the app off of my first page of apps because the icon is so damn sexy. Visuals aside; the app is fast, stable and easy to use. I find the most useful part of the application is the ability to transfer text and images to and from the iPhone to my MacBook Pro using tapbots’ free sync program (which you can download here).

For me, it is so much quicker loading up Pastebot then copying an image across to my Mac than having to hunt around for my iPhone USB cable then plugging it in then loading up iPhoto only to discover that iPhoto would much rather play games with me and not show my iPhone at all. I’m sure you get the picture; it’s much quicker to use Pastebot to transfer data to your Mac than to use any other program.

Final Remarks: awesome.

Consume — Mobile, ISP, Packages

Fellow Melbourne residents bjango have whipped up a winner here with Consume – a fresh app which visualises mobile/ISP usage, valued customer club cards and tracks packages in transit. Again, like Pastebot, I have been using this app since day one and it is still residing on my first home screen.

It’s easily the best service I’ve ever seen for monitoring usage – the graphs are nice and the information is clear and easy to read and understand. Hat tip for including Myki – we all know that needs to have a very close eye kept on it!

Final Remarks: gorgeous usage visualisation… what’s not to like?

Tweetie 2

Version two of nearly everyone’s favourite iPhone Twitter client is quite the follow up to a very popular app. The ease of use with this application is the biggest draw-card of Tweetie 2. There are many other Twitter clients that are stupidly complicated and not easy to use, thankfully Tweetie 2 is not one of these apps. Clean, soft lines; subtle iconography and simple colours make up this gorgeous looking app. It truly is a pleasure to use this app.

Final Remarks: So easy to use that 21/2 y/o iPad wielding kid could use it.

Outside

Next up is one of the best looking iPhone apps there has ever been. That’s right, I’m talking about Outside. The moment I open the window I know why I love owning and using this app. The graphics are gorgeous, the way the information is displayed is gorgeous – the whole app is just darn gorgeous!

Also included in this app is a Push notification system which can be used to alert you at any time of day about the weather conditions. It’s a recurring cost to run, but it’s very cheap. One little attention to detail I love is the colophon-esque settings gear on the Settings book.

Final Remarks: Gorgeous vectors with sweet animations.

Beats — BPM, Metronome

Another app from bjango, this time it’s Beats — a great app for DJ’s and other folks who are interested in music. Beats has three features – tempo tapper, metronome and a piano keyboard for key-ing songs. The futuristic interface makes me immediately think of my mixer (Allen & Heath xone:92 if you want to know) which I totally love.

Beats is full of cute little attention to details – like on the Key tab, surrounding the current key is the pattern similar to the Technics SL-1200 turntable platter and the Pioneer CDJ-1000 MK3 jog wheel.

Final Remarks: Robot DJ Helper reporting for duty!

Ramp Champ

The final app in this list is Ramp Champ. Search it on the app store… go on, I doubt you’ll make it back to this site until your iPhone runs out of battery. You’re back? Okay, onwards. I’m not a huge fan of games on the iPhone – mainly because I seem to suck at any game I touch so for a game to interested me it has to be very good. This is where Ramp Champ comes in – every pixel in this game is perfectly crafted for maximum awesomeness.

Aside from the game being totally awesome visually, I’m pretty sure it’s the only iPhone game to have an album on the iTunes store.

Final Remarks: Passionate love in every pixel. YEEAAAHHHH!
